Student Union protests by smearing cow dung on the principal’s office walls

  • Incident of Delhi University Principal Applying Cow Dung on Classroom Wall

  • The principal should try this experiment at home. The Vice Chancellor also expresses opposition

New Delhi – A controversy has erupted after the principal of Lakshmibai College, under Delhi University, applied cow dung on a classroom wall. In response, on April 15, Delhi University Students’ Union President Raunak Khatri smeared cow dung on Principal Pratyusha Vatsala’s office walls, sarcastically, “Everyone deserves a bit of coolness.”

Commenting on the matter, Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said, “If applying cow dung reduces heat in classrooms, the principal should first try this at her home and in her office. The lack of fans and coolers in classrooms should be addressed. She has been the principal for 10 years—why has she not focused on this issue before?”

Responding to the incident, Principal Dr Vatsala stated that the experiment was being conducted in the college’s porta cabin (a type of temporary room). “I applied cow dung to the wall because there is no harm in touching natural materials like soil and cow dung. Some people are spreading rumours without having any factual knowledge.”

Editorial Perspective

Even today, in many villages across India, house walls and floors are coated with cow dung. Various studies have shown its benefits. In such a context, those opposing and mocking this practice are making a joke of themselves.
