A ground in Shivamogga (Karnataka) fenced off claiming it to be Waqf property

Clash breaks out between Waqf supporters and opponents over fencing of Eidgah ground

Shivamogga (Karnataka) – A dispute recently broke out between Waqf supporters and opponents over fencing the ground in front of the District Collector’s Office, claiming it to be Waqf property. Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithunkumar calmed down the tension arising at that time.

1. Special prayers were arranged on Monday, the day of Eid-ul-Fitr at the Eidgah ground, in front of the District Collector’s Office. The next day, a 10-foot high fence was erected at the main entrance of the ground.

2. The fencing of the ground created obstacles for parking vehicles and the locals demanded its removal.

3. At this time, leaders of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and BJP came there and demanded the removal of the fence. They claimed that the land of the ground belonged to the Municipal Corporation and Muslims were only allowed to offer prayers there.

4. Muslims claimed that the land belonged to the Waqf Board, and was not a public place. Namaz and other religious programmes were organised there.

5. That generated an atmosphere of tension. The police reached the spot. People started a protest there, demanding that a case be registered against those who illegally erected the fence and that the wall be removed.

Editorial Perspective

This shows that the Waqf Act needed to be repealed to hold the Waqf Board accountable for claiming its right over any land and usurping it.
