Food Safety Department issues notices to 97 shops
Bengaluru (Karnataka) – The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) of Karnataka conducted raids on several local manufacturing units producing ice creams and soft drinks. These inspections were carried out to assess the quality of food products and the methods used in their production. According to reports, the authorities discovered the use of detergent powder in ice creams and phosphoric acid—a substance known to weaken bones—in soft drinks. As a result, notices were issued to 97 shops, and the manufacturers were collectively fined ₹38,000.
1. Authorities found unhygienic conditions and poor maintenance at several locations.
2. Some manufacturers were found using artificial milk made from detergent, urea, or starch to cut down production costs.
3. Instead of natural sugar, saccharin and harmful artificial colors were being used to enhance flavor and appearance.
4. Many manufacturers were using contaminated or non-potable water in the preparation of ice candies and soft drinks.
