Protest by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)
Kolkata (Bengal) – Slogans such as ‘Azad Kashmir’ and ‘Free Palestine’ have been written on the walls within the premises of Jadavpur University. These slogans, written on 11th March, are still there. Students from the student organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the BJP, have now protested against this. The students placed the Indian national flag over these slogans and raised slogans like ‘The Kashmir where Syama Prasad Mukherjee was martyred is ours,’ ‘Jai Hind’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’ The organisation also celebrated Shriramnavami within the university campus. Notably, the university administration had not granted permission for this celebration.

1. Nikhil Das, a student and member of the organisation, said, “We are happy that Puja is being done today on the university campus. This is the first time that Shri Ramchandra is being worshipped here on Shriramnavami. Shriram is the highest symbol of humanity. We have invited everyone.”
2. Nikhil Das further said, “The university administration grants permission for Iftar, but not for Shriramnavami. Slogans like ‘Free Kashmir’, ‘Free Manipur’ are allowed to be written, but permission is denied for Puja. This is wrong. Even so, we organised the Puja. Along with the students, teachers and non-teaching staff also participated. We are all celebrating Shriramnavami together and are very happy.”
3. Buddhadeb S, a professor from the Mathematics Department, also shared his opinion on the matter. He said, “I do not know whether the university gave permission for the Puja or not. If they denied it, then it is not right. Puja of Deity Shrikrishna is conducted here, then why not Puja for Shriramnavami? If the administration denied it, there must be some reason behind it. If the university has a policy of ‘no religious programs’, then that is fine; but allowing Iftar and denying Shriramnavami is wrong. Why this discrimination ?”

4. A female student, Somsurya Banerjee, said, “Our message is clear, there is no such thing as ‘Azad Kashmir.’ It is a myth. As long as there are nationalist students and people, Kashmir will never be separated from India.”
