Mumbai – Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has demanded that products with Halal certification should be banned in Maharashtra as has been done in Uttar Pradesh by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Mr Satish Sonar and Mr Ravi Nalawade of HJS recently met Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde with this demand when Shiv Sena MLA from Nanded, Mr Anand Tidake (Bondarkar) was also present. Dy CM Shinde has instructed the State Secretary for Food and Civil Supplies Department to present a proposal in this context. It has been conveyed by HJS that in a secular system, certification of products based on religion is unconstitutional and ban on Halal certified products in Maharashtra would be welcomed.

1. As per the law, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), a Government organisation, has the authority to decide the standard of the consumable products and issue certificates. ‘Halal Certification’ is a parallel system which violates the Government rules and creates confusion amongst consumers about the quality of products.

2. Billions of rupees are collected by organisations such as ‘Halal India Pvt Ltd.’, ‘Halal Certification Services India Pvt Ltd’, ‘Jamiat Ulama -E- Maharashtra’ and ‘Jamiat Ulama -I- Hind Halal Trust’, etc in the country, including Maharashtra, by issuing Halal certificates. Such certification has, therefore, been banned in Uttar Pradesh.

3. The Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitaraman, has also clarified that private organisations have no right to issue certificates and collect money. Moreover, the money collected by these organisations has been used to provide legal aid to about 700 accused from terrorist outfits like Lashkar-e-Toiba, Indian Mujahideen, Islamic State, etc which is quite shocking. Few relevant papers were also submitted to Dy CM Shinde.

4. Cases should be filed immediately against the private organisations illegally issuing Halal certificates in Maharashtra and stringent action should be taken against them. Halal certification, which is an attack on Hindus constitutional rights, should be stopped and necessary action should be taken against the private organisations by conducting inquiry into the money collected by them in the name of Halal certification. The illegal money earned through the issue of Halal certification should be extracted from them with interest, besides finding the use of the money collected in this manner, whether it was against national security. The above demands have been listed in the memorandum submitted by HJS. Dy CM has instructed the senior officers to present a proposal on this issue.
