New Delhi – There was a massive uproar in the Rajya Sabha on March 24 over the Congress Government in Karnataka’s reservations for Muslims in Government contracts. Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and J.P. Nadda made accusations against the Congress in the House. Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge tried to respond to these accusations, but even after that, the chaos continued in Parliament. After this, the proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm.
No sooner had the House proceedings resumed than Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar asked Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to speak. Rijiju said that a senior Congress leader holding a constitutional post had said that the party would amend the Constitution to provide reservations to Muslims. He said that amending the Constitution to allow reservations based on religion cannot be tolerated.
Leader of the House and Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda alleged that the Congress is tearing the Constitution apart. While framing the Indian Constitution, Dr Ambedkar had clearly said that reservation would not be given based on religion. This is an accepted principle of the Indian Constitution.
The Karnataka Government has given 4 per cent reservation to minorities in public contracts.
Editorial PerspectiveThere is no provision for reservation based on religion in the Constitution, yet will the Congress, taking advantage of its majority and disregarding the Constitution, ever give the country the rule of law ? It would be correct for the people to drive home this fact to Congress, which has violated the Constitution for the sake of Muslims! |
