Washington DC (United States) – The administration of US President Donald Trump has halted the ongoing cyber operations against Russia. Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, the Biden administration had imposed multiple sanctions on Russia, including cyber operations. However, the US has now shifted its stance in favour of Russia. US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth has directed the ‘Cyber Command’ to cease these operations.
According to a Pentagon intelligence officer, this order was issued even before the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy took place in the Oval Office of the White House.
1. According to international news agencies, the Trump administration is reviewing its operations against Russia. However, no public announcement has been made regarding this matter.
2. On March 2, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that bringing Russia to the negotiating table on the Ukraine issue is crucial. He further emphasized that if a biased and opposing stance is taken against Putin, it will be difficult to engage him in discussions.
3. According to two former US officials, withdrawing from cyber operations against Russia is a major gamble.
4. Most of the US cyber operations against Russia are conducted in Britain. At the same time, cyber attacks on the US by Russia are increasing. According to intelligence officers, these criminal attacks were sanctioned by Russian authorities.
5. A similar situation is unfolding in Europe, where incidents of damage to critical infrastructure are steadily rising.
6. Interestingly, the US has been assisting Europe in these matters; however halting the cyber operations against Russia could create significant challenges for European nations.
Editorial PerspectiveThe recent insult of the Ukrainian President in the US has led several European nations to strengthen their ties with Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is systematically lifting sanctions imposed on Russia. This marks the beginning of a major shift in global politics. |
