Bangladesh Changes Hindu Name of Bengali New Year Procession !

Dhaka, Bangladesh – The Government of Bangladesh has announced a change in the name and spelling of the traditional Bengali New Year procession, which was recognized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Many political parties and Islamic fundamentalist organizations were already demanding this change. This was a Hindu-hating demand as the name and content of the procession were similar to Hindu culture. On April 14, Bangladesh will mark the arrival of Bengali New Year 1432, traditionally celebrated as Pohela Boishakh. As part of the festivities, the government has officially renamed the iconic ‘Mangala Shobhajatra’ procession to ‘Varshabaran Ananda Shobhajatra’.
