Dhaka (Bangladesh) – A rally was held at Suhrawardy Park in the Dhaka University area, where protesters condemned Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip and expressed solidarity with Palestine. It is reported that over 1 lakh people participated in the rally. Carrying Palestinian flags, the protesters raised slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “Down with Israel”. During the demonstration, effigies of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were burned. There are also claims that an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was burned.
The protest was supported by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, along with various Islamic organizations.
In recent times, Bangladesh has been witnessing continuous protests against Israel. Just last week, thousands of people took to the streets, raising slogans to condemn Israel’s attacks on Gaza. During the protests, demonstrators targeted companies associated with Israel, the United States, and their allied countries, and carried out acts of vandalism.
Attacks were carried out on brands like Bata, KFC, and Pizza Hut in several districts, including Bogra, Sylhet, and Cox’s Bazar.
Bangladesh, being a Muslim-majority country, has no diplomatic relations with Israel. The country officially supports an independent Palestine.
Editorial PerspectiveIn Bangladesh, it has been observed that whenever protests break out – regardless of the reason – protestors vent their anger on the local Hindu community, leading to the act of persecution. It wouldn’t be surprising if the same happens again this time. |
