Road construction for Amarnath Yatra may harm the environment : PDP MLA Waheed Para

Raises issue in the Assembly

MLA Waheed Para, People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) – In preparation for the Amarnath Yatra, roads are being constructed in Baltal and Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir. In the Assembly, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed Para raised concerns about these roads, stating that their construction could harm the environment. He suggested that the yatra should be organised in a manner that does not pose any threat to the environment.

BJP senior leader and Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma responded, saying that PDP has a history of opposing the Amarnath Yatra. He recalled that even in 2008, PDP had hurt Hindu sentiments during the Amarnath Yatra, and the same mentality is visible today.

He further stated, “The Amarnath Yatra is not just about faith; it is directly linked to the livelihood of thousands of people in Jammu & Kashmir. If Waheed Para is genuinely concerned about the environment, why is he raising questions only about the Amarnath Yatra? There are many places in Kashmir where environmental discussions can take place, but PDP is deliberately targeting Hindu faith.”

Editorial Perspective

Why is environmental damage always highlighted only in connection with Hindu festivals or pilgrimages ? Why does no one raise environmental concerns during festivals of other religions ?
