Kolkata – Violence erupted at Jadavpur University on 01.03.2025 as goons associated with Students Federation of India and CPI (M) students’ wing had clashes. Bengal education minister Bratya Basu and many professors got injured. The violence occurred during the protests staged demanding declaration of dates for the students’ organisations elections.
1.The protestors attacked the education minister’s car and broke its window glasses. The minister stated that a brick was thrown at him due to which his hand and face was injured. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment.

2.The education minister was to attend a meeting at the University with West Bengal College and University Professors Association (WBCUPA). He came out after the meeting when he was stopped by leftist goons and they started raising slogans asking him to go back and calling him a ‘Chor (thief)’. The situation turned so grave that two cars going with the minister as his security staff were also damaged. During this, few professors were targeted by the protesting students and they chased WBCUPA members and professor Omprakash Mishra. One student was hit on the head in this violence and got seriously injured along with injury to 2 professors. There is an allegation of tearing off a sari of a lady professor.
3.Bratya Basu stated after the incident that he could have summoned the Police but he refrained. Had such a thing happened in Uttar Pradesh, would any student behave in the manner like they did in Bengal ? The attackers target only TMC people.
4.There is a report on the vandalization of the office of TMC connected employees in Jadavpur University. There is also an allegation of a student getting injured due to the minister’s car banging into him.
5.The leftist students organisation has put the blame on the education minister for this violence and arson, accusing him of trying to trample over a protesting student.
6.BJP leader Amit Malaviya stated while criticising Mamata Banerjee Government that the students are infuriated since the rape and murder of a lady doctor in R G Kar Hospital and the attack on the education minister was its outcome.
7.TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said that their tolerance should not be considered as their weakness. The attackers will be answered in a democratic way.
