Hindus protest after teacher cuts sacred thread on Hindu student’s wrist at South African school

Acknowledgement from Education Department that the incident was unacceptable

Johannesburg (South Africa) – A teacher at Drakensberg Secondary School in KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa cut the sacred thread tied around the wrist of a Hindu student. The school is said to be banning the wearing of cultural and religious symbols. Following this incident, the Hindu Mahasabha of South Africa has demanded action from education authorities.

1. The Hindu Mahasabha has said that we are investigating the incident of religious intolerance in the school; but the investigation is being hampered as the student with whom the incident took place is afraid to come forward. He has suffered a lot due to the harassment at the school.

2.Muzi Mahlambi, spokesperson for the provincial education department in KwaZulu-Natal, said the department insists that the constitution is the supreme law of the land and any school policy that contradicts it is unacceptable. No student should be punished for their religious affiliation.
