Supreme Court Denies Permission for Urs Celebration
(Urs refers to a festival held in memory of a Muslim religious leader’s death anniversary)
New Delhi – A petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking permission to organize an Urs celebration at a demolished dargah in Somnath district, Gujarat. The Supreme Court rejected the petition and denied permission.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that all unauthorized structures, including temples on government land, have been removed. No religious rituals are allowed at such sites. Even Hindu religious ceremonies or activities are not permitted on previously encroached land.

On September 28 last year, a campaign was launched to remove encroachments from public land near the Somnath temple.
Editorial PerspectiveSeeking permission to celebrate Urs at a demolished dargah is an extreme violation of the law. How did they even dare to take this matter to the Supreme Court ? The public believes that such individuals should be strictly penalized by the court to set a precedent. |
