Mumbai – Slum dwellers in Jogeshwari started a protest against the railway administration while the latter was carrying out an operation against unauthorised slums. The protesters later pelted stones at the Police too. Five Police officers were injured in the stone-pelting incident. Following this, the Police arrested 20 to 25 people.

The incident took place at 11 a.m. on 22nd January. The Police have filed a case against the protesters. After the locals were detained by the Police, there was a brief period of chaos. The railway administration had already issued notices to remove the unauthorised constructions.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Why have unauthorised slums been allowed to proliferate outside all suburban railway stations in Mumbai until now ? Action should also be taken against the administrative officers and local leaders responsible for this.
  • The slum dwellers have not only encroached on railway land, but they have also been involved in thefts, stone-pelting, and throwing balloons on people, resulting in serious injuries. These slum dwellers have become a significant headache for Mumbai’s residents. They have even gone to the extent of attacking the Police. It’s better not to imagine how many Bangladeshi infiltrators might be hiding in these slums.
