‘Attacks on Hindus are political in nature, not communal’ : Bangladesh Govt

Bangladesh’s Interim Government makes another anti-Hindu statement

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Referring to a Police report, the Bangladesh Government stated that “most of the incidents against minority communities since 4th August last year were of a ‘political nature’ and not communal.” The Police have established a helpline and shared a WhatsApp number to directly receive complaints of communal violence and maintain contact with minority communities.

The media department of Interim Government Chief Muhammad Yunus said,

1. Following recent claims made by the ‘Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council’, a Police investigation was initiated. The council alleged that on 5th August, 2024, a day before ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country, 2,010 incidents of religious violence took place. Of these, 1,769 incidents involved attacks and vandalism.

2. So far, the Police have registered 62 cases based on the claims and have arrested at least 35 individuals as part of the investigation. The findings revealed that 1,234 incidents were of a political nature, 20 were communal, and at least 161 claims were found to be false. A total of 115 cases were registered, leading to the arrest of at least 100 individuals.

3. “We have a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of religious attack in the country. Police have been instructed to arrest the culprits, and compensation has been announced for the victims,” stated the Government.

Editorial Perspective

Bangladesh has now become a hardline Islamic country. Non-Muslims there are being denied rights and recognition, and even if atrocities are committed against them, they are justified under various pretexts, as has once again become evident.
