No European country has been attacked with Indian weapons; but Europe sells weapons which are used to attack India: EAM Dr S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar rebukes Europe over its take on India purchasing Russian oil

New Delhi – India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar sharply criticised Europe, stating that India’s weapons have never been used to attack Europe, whereas Europe sells weapons to countries that use them to attack India.

European countries have often alleged that by purchasing crude oil from Russia, India is effectively providing Russia with funds that are being used in the war against Ukraine. Against this backdrop, the External Affairs Minister strongly criticised Europe’s double standards.

India does not succumb to international pressure

Responding to a question on why India continues to import crude oil from Russia, Jaishankar said that India does not succumb to any international pressure or narrative. India purchases oil solely based on price and availability. He stated that after the United States and European countries imposed sanctions on Russia, they began sourcing oil from Gulf nations. These Gulf countries had traditionally been India’s major suppliers of crude oil. As a result of Europe’s actions, India was compelled to turn to Russia to safeguard its energy security. The External Affairs Minister further noted that, at one stage, even the United States had advised India to purchase Russian oil in order to help keep global fuel prices under control. Jaishankar firmly stated that India will always make decisions with its national interest as the foremost consideration.
