Ancient ‘well of death’ found at 150 metres from Jama Masjid

Sambhal (UP) – An ancient well has been found during the ongoing search for ancient structures here. It was known as ‘well of death’ which got filled up. Administration has started unearthing the lost treasure. This well in near Sarthal Chowki in Sambhal. People had faith that bathing in the well gave moksha (liberation from the cycle of life and death). This well exists at 150 km from Shahi Jama Masjid where ruckus was created at the time of survey. In Sambhal, administration is searching for the 68 Dev Sthan and 19 wells on the route of 24 km (1 to 5 km) parikrama (circumambulation). So far, 22 wells have been unearthed. Restoration of all the ancient structures will be undertaken.

A book written in 1985 mentions this well. It mentions about Sambhal parikrama and Teerth Kshetra (holy places). The book mentions ‘Vimal Koop’, ‘Bali koop’ etc. (koop means well)  Local Hindus accuse land encroachment of the well and Muslims are also claiming the land. The Archaeological Survey of India has already surveyed a few sites in Sambhal.
