New Delhi – The Supreme Court has stated that reservations cannot be granted on the basis of religion. This clarification came during a hearing on petitions challenging the decision of the Kolkata High Court. Since 2010, the Bengal Government had been granting reservations to various communities by classifying them as Other Backward Classes (OBC), a move that was later invalidated by the High Court. The Supreme Court has announced that the next hearing on the matter will take place on January 7th.
