New Delhi – The Supreme Court has directed the Civil Court not to disclose the survey report of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Notably, the survey team has yet to submit the report. The Court directed the team to present it in a sealed envelope and ordered that “no action be taken in this matter until 8th January.” Emphasising the need for peace in Sambhal, the Court cited this as the reason behind its directive. The next hearing is scheduled for 6th January, during which the mosque committee is allowed to appeal the Civil Court’s order in the High Court. Hindus claim that the Shahi Masjid was formerly the Harihar Temple, prompting a petition in the Civil Court, which led to the order for a survey.

1. The survey, led by Advocate Commissioner Ramesh Singh Raghav, faced disruptions. Raghav reported that violence on 24th November prevented the finalisation of the report.
2. Advocate Shakeel Ahmad, representing the mosque, stated that they have sought all related documents from the Court. The survey report was not submitted today, and further surveys of the mosque have been halted. The Civil Court will now hear the case on 8th January, 2025, and will decide on the submission deadline for the survey report in due course.
3. Ahead of Friday namaz, heavy Police deployment was arranged in Sambhal city. Police Commissioner Anjaneya Kumar Singh earlier stated that locals would pray in their respective mosques, with measures in place to prevent outsiders from entering the area.
4. A three-member judicial commission has been formed by the State Government to investigate the Sambhal violence. The commission will submit its report to the Government within two months.
