Tehran (Iran) – Over the past few years, Iran’s decision to wear the hijab in public has been widely opposed by women there. Women there have taken to the streets and protested against the law regarding hijab. They alleged at the international level that Iran was trying to crush these protests. Now, it has taken a stricter stance in this regard. It plans to open psychiatric hospitals across the country for women who resist wearing the hijab. These hospitals will be named ‘Hijab Removal Treatment Centres’.
Mehri Talebi Darestani, head of the Women and Family Department at the Tehran headquarters, told Iranian media that Iran would soon open a “treatment centre for hijab removal”. Scientific treatment will be given to women who oppose the Hijab law.
Iranian human rights advocate Hossein Raisi criticised the idea of opening such hospitals. He said it was not Islamic or Iranian law to open hospitals to treat women who refused to wear the hijab. The Government’s Women and Family Department is working under the direct authority of Iran’s Supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
