China spreading propaganda against Sikhs across the world through social media

  • Meta’s Report
  • Attempt to criticise India

New Delhi – It has come to light that China is engaging in a global campaign against Sikhs. Through social media, China is running various operations to defame and incite Sikhs. This propaganda targets the Sikh community worldwide, including in India, the US, and Canada, according to information provided by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

Propaganda through both Hindi and English accounts

China is running hateful accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and X in both Hindi and English, trying to provoke and defame Sikhs. These posts include content related to the Sikh community in Punjab and worldwide, the Khalistan movement, the murder of Khalistani Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, and criticism of the Indian Government.

Facebook closed such accounts

Facebook has started to clamp down on these Chinese accounts. It has removed 37 accounts and 13 pages operated from China on its platform.

Joint Conspiracy by China and Pakistan

Until now, such campaigns targeting Sikhs and opposing India were conducted by Pakistani accounts on social media. This is the first instance of such actions from China. Indian security agencies suspect this to be a joint conspiracy by China and Pakistan.

Editorial Perspective

China is smart in tactics. India must now adopt a tit-for-tat policy.
