The ‘Green Islam’ movement gaining momentum in Indonesia, under the leadership of Imam Nasruddin Umar

  • Muslims do not care about the law, but they listen to their religious leaders – Indonesian Ulema Council
  • Green Islam means environmentally conscious Islam
  • Imam leads prayers in a mosque

Jakarta (Indonesia) – In Indonesia, which has the largest Muslim population, the ‘Green Islam’ movement has started. Green Islam means ‘environmentally conscious Islam’. Nasruddin Omar is the chief imam of the Istiklal Mosque in the capital, Jakarta. This movement has started under his leadership. Environment is a major theme in his speeches.

In this context, Hayu Prabowo, the head of environmental protection at the Indonesian Ulema Council, said that (Muslim) people do not follow the law. They don’t care about it; however, they listen to their religious leaders; because their religious leaders say, you can’t learn from laws. Nevertheless, Nasruddin Umar has noted these efforts, even by the international community.

Umar often warns that the most dangerous fault as humans is that we consider the Earth merely an object. The more greedy we become, the sooner the world will end. Therefore, just as Muslims fast during Ramzan, they should also consider it their duty to protect the Earth. It should also become their habit to plant trees during daily prayers. We must adhere to the advice of Mohammad, “Muslims must take care of nature”.
