Muzaffarabad (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) – Pakistani security forces opened fire on local residents who have been protesting in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for the past 20 days. Twelve people were killed and 38 others were injured in the firing.
More than 100 residents of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir living in the United States staged a protest outside the White House against the Pakistani Army’s crackdown. They demanded the withdrawal of the Pakistani Army from the region and called for an international investigation into the firing.
The Joint Awami Action Committee, which is leading the protests, alleged that security personnel opened fire while dressed in civilian clothes. To stop the protest march, the Pakistani Army and police have sealed off Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad and nearby towns. Barricades have been erected on all major routes, and 4,000 Army personnel, police personnel and Frontier Corps personnel have been deployed. The committee claims that despite the crackdown, more than 40,000 people have joined the march heading towards Muzaffarabad.
The committee’s agitation is based on a 38-point charter of demands. The principal demands include the abolition of 12 reserved seats in the Legislative Assembly, granting greater powers to local self-government bodies, subsidies on electricity, flour and fertilisers, and the release of detained leaders.
