Dress code enforced for school-teachers in Maharashtra

A commendable decision of Maharashtra’s Education Ministry

Mumbai – A circular has been issued by the Ministry of School Education, Maharashtra, enforcing the dress code for school teachers. This will apply to all the schools run by local civic bodies, private or minority management, whether funded, unfunded or self-funded, across the medium of education and boards.

Female teachers have to wear either a sari or salwar/churidar kurta, with a dupatta, while male teachers have to wear a shirt and trousers (with the shirt neatly tucked in), says the circular. The circular is available on the Government’s website.

Respective schools can choose a light colour for their teachers’ uniforms. The circular also discourages teachers from wearing dark colour dresses with fancy designs or pictures, jeans, T-shirts etc. There are guidelines about the footwear to be worn. Teachers must wear footwear suitable to their uniform. Male teachers should wear shoes.

The Ministry has introduced the use of a prefix for teachers as ‘Tr’ or ‘Ti’ in Marathi before their names and teachers are to be addressed accordingly. The Government will finalise a symbol for the school-teachers which they can display on their vehicles.
