India does not bully neighbouring countries, but helps them : Dr S Jaishankar, EAM

New Delhi – External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar responded pointedly to a question regarding India’s role in the sub-continent and the Indian Ocean region during the launch event of his book Why India Matters, dismissing the notion of India being a bully. He said, ‘Big bullies don’t provide a whopping aid of $4.5 billion to help neighbours when in distress or supply vaccines to other countries when Covid was on’. Jaishankar was asked this question concerning the Maldives.

Jaishankar added that we always help other countries in their time of need. India is always ready to help other countries in times of crisis. We deliver relief materials, medicines, fertilisers, etc. to war-torn countries. The world also appreciates us for this.

Jaishankar said India’s investment in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Maldives has proliferated over the past few years. The kind of trade going on with neighbouring countries today is important. Our relations with neighbouring countries are improving. We are using ports in Bangladesh for trade. Look at Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. A network of roads and railways has been laid there for better connectivity. This was not the case 10 years ago.
