Kolkata – “I can guarantee that in the next seven days, not just in West Bengal, but the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) will be implemented across India,” claimed Union Minister Shantanu Thakur. Thakur, a BJP MP from Bengal’s Bangaon, was addressing a public gathering at Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas.
On Thakur’s statement, the ruling Trinamool Congress in the State once again reiterated that the Citizenship Amendment Act will not be implemented in the State under any circumstances. Trinamool Congress State Spokesperson Kunal Ghosh alleged that the Union Government is spreading such news to mislead people before the Lok Sabha elections.
During a public gathering held in Kolkata last month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also asserted that no one can stop the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act.
On this, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that, “Shah wants to divide the people. Earlier, the citizenship card was the responsibility of the District Collector, but now it has been snatched only for politics. They want to give it (citizenship) to some and deny it to others. If one community gets citizenship, other community should also get it.”
Editorial Perspective
It is not surprising that such a stance is being taken by the Trinamool Congress, which is doing politics based on the appeasement of Muslims, especially the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. |
