Expressed concern over relations with India

Male (Maldives) – Opposition parties in the Maldives have expressed concern over relations with India, criticising the Government of President Mohamed Muizzu. Opposition parties have described India as an old ally of Maldives.
Maldivian Democratic Party and Democrats have openly supported India while criticising their country’s Government. India and Maldives have been at loggerheads over the recent decision of the newly-elected President, Mohamed Muizzu, to make Beijing his first port of call after assuming office. On the other hand, China’s spy ship will arrive at the port of Maldives. Due to this, the relations between the two countries are likely to be strained.
Opposition parties have said that the current Government’s foreign policy feels like the Government is creating an anti-India atmosphere. This is dangerous for the development of the country.
A significant controversy arose recently when a Maldivian deputy minister, along with other cabinet members and government officials, made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep and his proposal to develop the Indian island into a global beach tourism destination.
