12 illegal mosques demolished within a 15-km radius of the Indo–Pak border in Rajasthan

Petition challenges the action in the Rajasthan High Court

Jaipur (Rajasthan) – Administrative action to remove illegal mosques in Rajasthan’s India–Pakistan border region has sparked controversy. Local Muslims staged protests against the action in several border districts, including Barmer and Bikaner. While submitting memoranda to the administration, they alleged that the affected parties were not given adequate opportunity before the mosques were demolished and that due procedure was not properly followed. They demanded that the administration reconsider the action.

According to a petition filed in the Rajasthan High Court, around 12 mosques in different villages within a 15-kilometre radius of the international border were demolished between 18 and 20 June. The petition claims that the action violated the principles of natural justice, as the affected parties were not allowed to present their case.

State Government: The matter concerns national security

The State Government informed the Court that the matter is directly related to national security. It maintained that prior permission under the prescribed rules is mandatory for any permanent construction in sensitive areas adjoining the international border. The Government submitted that the action was taken on this basis.

Editorial Perspective

  • What was the administration doing while these illegal mosques were being constructed ?
  • Will the administration stop after merely demolishing the illegal mosques, or will it also make efforts to imprison those responsible ?
