Mumbai – Heavy rainfall at several places across the State on 6th July severely affected Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Pune, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and the Ghat regions. Landslides, disruption of transport, waterlogging and uprooting of trees were reported from several places. Rivers in many cities crossed the danger level, affecting normal life. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and several other districts.

6 killed after a section of a chawl collapses in Mumbai

1. Heavy rainfall disrupted normal life in Mumbai and its suburbs. On the night of 5th July, a section of a three-storey dilapidated chawl suddenly collapsed in the Jantanagar area of Mankhurd. Five children and a woman died on the spot, while a young man was injured. As the chawl had been declared dangerous, residents were removing their belongings when the entire structure suddenly collapsed.

2. Due to the heavy rainfall, suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour railway lines were running several minutes behind schedule, causing inconvenience to lakhs of passengers. Some passengers remained stranded at railway stations.

3. Following the Meteorological Department’s heavy rainfall warning for Mumbai, a holiday was declared for all Government, private, municipal and aided schools and colleges in the city.

Landslides on the ‘Missing Link’ and railway track bring Mumbai-Pune transport to a standstill!

1. A major landslide occurred near the newly constructed Missing Link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, leading to the closure of the route. Waterlogging was reported at several places on the expressway, and water entered the premises of a food mall. Not only the Mumbai-Pune Expressway but also the old Mumbai-Pune Highway was closed to traffic. Long queues of vehicles stretching several kilometres formed on the highway, causing severe inconvenience to travellers.

2. A landslide onto the railway tracks near Lonavala completely disrupted Mumbai-Pune railway services. The administration appealed to citizens, saying, “As the situation is serious, citizens should avoid travelling between Pune and Mumbai until further instructions are issued.”

3. Due to the extremely heavy rainfall, a portion of Visapur Fort in the Maval subdivision collapsed, burying a family from a nearby village beneath the debris. The family included a husband, wife and their son. The National Disaster Response Force has been deployed for the rescue operation.

4. Water accumulated at several places on the Pune-Nashik Highway. As water flowed over the roads, traffic moved slowly at some places and came to a complete standstill in others. Several stretches of the Pune-Nashik Highway were completely submerged.

Four bridges closed at Alandi; Thousands of Warkaris stranded

Due to heavy rainfall, the Indrayani River at Alandi has crossed the danger level. As the water level continues to rise, all four bridges have been closed. As a result, thousands of Warkaris who had arrived for the Ashadhi Wari were stranded at various dharmashalas and the darshan hall. They have now been shifted to safer locations. The Disaster Management Department is carrying out rescue operations on a war footing. Alandi Municipal Council Chief Officer Madhav Khandekar appealed, “As the river water level is continuously rising, devotees, Warkaris and residents should follow the administration’s instructions and cooperate.”

Heavy rainfall in Konkan; Mumbai-Goa highway blocked

Landslide in Kashedi

1. Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days has created flood-like conditions at several places in Konkan. At around 2.30 a.m. on 5th July, a massive landslide occurred near Hotel Anusaya (Khavati) in the Kashedi Ghat on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway, blocking the highway. As soon as information about the incident was received, teams from the Khed Police, Highway Administration, Revenue Department and the National Highways Authority of India began clearing the debris on a war footing. After 12 hours, one side of the highway was reopened to traffic.

2. The Jagbudi River at Khed crossed the danger level, making the flooding situation extremely serious. As a result, Khed’s main market remained submerged for more than 15 hours, bringing normal life to a standstill. As a safety measure, the administration temporarily suspended electricity supply to the town. Although the river level is gradually receding, water remains in low-lying areas and the marketplace.

Red alert for many parts of the State till 8th July: Chief Minister

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a meeting at the Emergency Management Control Room to review the rain situation. He said, “The amount of rainfall normally received during the entire month of July has fallen within these four days. A red alert has been issued for many parts of the State till 8th July. Therefore, everyone should remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel. A cloudburst has been forecast for Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, and a red alert has been issued there for 7th July. Work is underway to remove the 100-tonne debris that fell on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Warkaris coming for the Ashadhi Wari should stay in Pune instead of proceeding to Alandi.”
