Municipal Corporation staff removing unauthorised hoardings outside the ministers’ residences near Mantralaya

Mumbai, 5 July (News) – Hundreds of unauthorised hoardings of political leaders are being erected regularly in the vicinity of Maharashtra’s Mantralaya. Once these hoardings are removed, new ones are put up at the very same locations the following day. This has become a daily occurrence. As a result, removing these illegal hoardings has become a headache for the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC). The administration’s manpower, time and money are being wasted on this exercise.

Government resolutions directing action against unauthorised hoardings in public places are issued from Mantralaya itself. However, hundreds of hoardings are erected outside the entrances to Mantralaya and throughout its surrounding area. The unauthorised hoardings outside Mantralaya present a classic case of “darkness beneath the lamp”.

Removing unauthorised hoardings takes an entire day ! – Mumbai Municipal Corporation employee (On the field)

Speaking about the issue, employees engaged in removing hoardings said, “A Municipal Corporation goods vehicle regularly patrols the area from Mantralaya to Colaba to remove unauthorised hoardings. Four to five employees have to spend the entire day carrying out this work. There are so many hoardings in this area that eight hours have to be devoted to removing them every day.”

Don’t ministers find this objectionable ?

The ministers’ residences are located along the road outside the main entrance to Mantralaya. Hoardings are even put up on the compound walls outside these residences. Over-enthusiastic workers of political parties from across the State put up these hoardings to convey greetings to ministers. Ministers are, in fact, expected to ensure that public places are not defaced through such illegal hoardings. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be happening. It is also possible that the ministers may have issued instructions, but the administration has failed to act. Nevertheless, the fact remains that illegal hoardings continue to be erected.

Police themselves avoid taking action for fear of action against them !

Almost all the hoardings erected in the Mantralaya area are political and belong to political office-bearers. “The Police do not take action against those putting up these hoardings because they fear action may be taken against them instead,” a police officer said.

Who is responsible for the defacement of cities and villages through hoardings ?

At present, massive hoardings can be seen at important locations across the State. This trend has now spread even to villages and rural areas, resulting in the defacement of public places. Since action is not taken even at the State’s most important locations, this menace has spread throughout Maharashtra. It is because timely and serious action was not taken that unauthorised hoardings have now become a major problem across the State.

Editorial Perspective

  • Will the administration, which cannot prevent unauthorised hoardings from being erected even outside Mantralaya, ever be able to stop such practices across the State ?
  • The cost of removing these hoardings should be recovered from those who erect them, and they should be imprisoned. Only then will such practices stop !
