Chennai – The Madras High Court on Thursday sentenced Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy and his wife P Visalakshi to 3 years of imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case. They have also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh each. The judge suspended the sentence for 30 days as K Ponmudy is currently serving as Higher Education Minister. Earlier the sessions Court had acquitted him and his wife. Now if Ponmudy appeals to the Supreme Court and it does not stay the High Court’s decision, then Ponmudy will lose his legislator status as well as the ministry.
Ponmudy has been proven guilty as per the Anti-Corruption Law section 13(2)(1)(e) of the Indian Penal Code. This section is about a public servant’s criminal misdemeanour and disproportionate assets.
The High Court said that P Visalakshi has been proven guilty under the Indian Penal Code’s section 109 (abetment) and the Anti-Corruption law’s same sections that applied to her husband.
