During Diwali and other occasions, it is more beneficial to use traditional mud lamps with sesame oil and cotton wicks instead of wax lamps ! – Research by Maharshi Adhyatma Vishwavidyalay

Mr. Girish Pandit Patil

The festival which dispels darkness and spreads light is ‘Diwali’ ! The tradition of lighting lamps in every house during Diwali, started way back in Tretayug (2nd era in the cycle of 4 eras). When Shriram returned to Ayodhya after defeating demon Ravan, the subjects had welcomed Shriram by lighting lamps. In today’s raja-tama predominant era, wax lamps are available in plenty in the market and the trend of using them has increased among the people. However the elderly still prefer to light the traditional mud lamps with sesame oil and cotton wicks. Mud lamps using sesame oil and cotton wicks have importance with respect to sattvikta (Sattva component). To make society aware of this importance, the effect of the vibrations emitted after lighting a wax lamp and a traditional mud lamp with oil, on the environment was scientifically studied. This study was made with the ‘Universal Aura Scanner’(UAS).

Mr. Ashish Sawant using the U.A.S. device for the experiment

1. Observations of wax lamps and mud lamps

In this study, readings were taken of both lamps, before and after lighting them, immediately after the lamps were extinguished and 10 minutes after they were extinguished, to study the effect on the environment.  The observations are given ahead.

1. Wax Lamp

Action Negative energy aura (metres) Positive energy aura (metres)
Before lighting 182.40 0
After lighting 386.80 0
Immediately after it was extinguished 479.40 0
10 minutes after it was extinguished 389.40 0

2. Mud Lamp

Action Negative energy aura (metres) Positive energy aura (metres)
Before lighting 0 13.22
After lighting 0 65.90
Immediately after it was extinguished 0 95.40
10 minutes after it was extinguished 0 36.90

2. Conclusion of the study

2 A. Negative vibrations emitted from the wax lamp, and positive vibrations from the mud lamp : The baseline UAS reading of the wax lamp showed a negative energy aura. After the lamp was lit, and after it got extinguished, the negative energy aura in it increased progressively. On the contrary, in the mud lamp with sesame oil and cotton wick the baseline reading showed a positive energy aura and after the lamp was lit and after it got extinguished, its positive energy aura kept increasing.

2 B. Effect of the vibrations of both the lamps remained in the environment even after the lamps were extinguished : Even 10 minutes after the wax lamp was extinguished it emitted negative energy aura to a large extent,  whereas 10 minutes after the mud lamp was extinguished it emitted high positive energy aura. It can be deduced from this that when we light mud lamps, their positive vibrations continue to remain in the environment for some time even after they are extinguished.

2 C. Use mud lamps instead of wax lamps ! : The negative energy aura in a wax lamp 10 minutes after it was extinguished, was even more than soon after the lamp was lit. This implies that it takes time for the negative vibrations in a wax lamp to reduce and come to its baseline level. Ten minutes after the mud lamp was extinguished, its positive vibrations continued to remain in the environment. Thus, it is beneficial to use the traditional mud lamp over the wax lamp.

3. Spiritual analysis of the observations in the study

3 A. Negative vibrations emitted from the wax lamp due to man-made tama predominant components, whereas positive vibrations emitted from the mud lamp due to the natural Sattva predominant components like sesame oil and cotton wick : Wax is artificially made, whereas mud, sesame oil and cotton are naturally available. In general, natural products are Sattva predominant, where as artificial products are tama predominant. As per the predominant nature in a product, those very vibrations are emitted into the atmosphere. Due to Sattvik components, the mud lamp had positive vibrations. On the contrary, due to the man-made tama predominant components, the wax lamp was found to have negative vibrations. The environment becomes positive due to Sattva predominant components, and negative due to tama predominant components. One can deduce from this that, it is spiritually beneficial to light mud lamps with sesame oil and handmade cotton wicks.

4. An appeal to the readers – Use the traditional mud lamps instead of wax lamps during Diwali !

Diwali is a festival of radiance and lights which lasts for more than 4 days. Depending on the number of days and the type of lamps we light, those particular vibrations will be emitted in the whole house. In our study though the wax lamps looked attractive, the baseline UAS readings displayed a negative energy aura. Lighting wax lamps during Diwali, will emit negative vibrations throughout the house which will remain even after the lamps are extinguished. Therefore, to benefit at the spiritual level and spread  radiance and positivity in the entire house, it is best to use the traditional mud lamps with sesame oil and cotton wicks instead of the wax lamps !’
