Udupi (Karnataka) – While every student is now pursuing a ‘career’ by becoming a doctor, engineer, etc., students from Sugun School, run by Puthige Matha in Udupi, are pursuing a ‘career’ in the priesthood. Every student in this school can speak, write and read English, Sanskrit and Kannada. This school was established 9 years ago.
Students studying in this school to become priests are taught rituals, duties and ethics. They are also taught to be kind to animals and respect elders.
The interdependence of man and nature, discipline, the Vedic perspective behind a contemplative lifestyle, etc. are also introduced. Swami Prasannacharya of Puthige Matha said that at present all the students are from the Brahmin community; but we hope that in the future, students from all parts of the country, from all castes, will come here and get training to become priests along with knowledge and science.
This school is run under the ‘National Institute of Open Schooling’. Puthige Matha has also started schools in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hiriyadka. A total of 250 students study in them. Here, accommodation, food, and tuition fees are charged at Rs 16,000 per year.
The shortage of priests from abroad will be filled ! – Manager of the MathaWhile giving information about this, Puthige Matha Manager Shri Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji said, “The Hindu population is increasing in USA, Australia and European countries. The number of temples is also increasing. However, there is a shortage of priests and Acharyas there. We are educating students so that those who have settled in these countries can maintain their connection with Indian culture. The students here are very happy with this education.” |
