Chennai – Ferry (boat) services have been started between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka. The fare for this service will be Rs 7,670 per person. In 1982, the sea traffic between the 2 countries was stopped due to the internecine war that started in northern Sri Lanka. It has now been resumed through the ferry service.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present at its inauguration ceremony. On this occasion, the Prime Minister said that this ferry service is an important step to further strengthen India-Sri Lanka relations. India and Sri Lanka share historically the same culture, and commerce, and civilisation. We are now ushering a new chapter in diplomatic and economic relations between India and Sri Lanka. This ferry service will reignite all the historical and cultural ties between the 2 countries. At this time, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the traffic between the two countries was disrupted due to the internecine war in northern Sri Lanka.
