Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira detained by Punjab Police in a drug case

Chandigarh – Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira was detained by Punjab Police in connection with a 2015 drug smuggling case. Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal have condemned this action. A video has been made viral on the Facebook account of Khaira wherein he is seen arguing with the Police. Khaira is seen asking the Police for a warrant and reasons for his arrest. On this, the Deputy Superintendent of Police is telling him that he was being arrested in connection with an old drug smuggling case. Khaira is seen protesting and accusing that the action was politically motivated.

In March 2015, cases were filed against nine persons at Jalalabad under the Drugs (Control) Act, 1950. They were alleged to have helped the people involved in a drug case and in making fake passports. Inquiry was conducted into the case at that time, and they were arrested. The inquiry in the case has been going on since then. (If the Police are still conducting an inquiry into a 2015 case and taking action, it shows their incompetency. – Editor)
