Earlier, Patil had said that farmer suicide cases were less before 2015 but after the Government started giving compensation of Rs 5 lakh, the number of cases is increasing. Farmer’s leaders insisted that Shivanand Patil should withdraw his statement immediately and apologise to the farmers. Patil said, “I did not make any statement to hurt the sentiments of farmers,” he said, adding that he was merely advising the media to wait for forensic science laboratory reports before reporting on farmer suicides.
