SC upholds Calcutta High Court’s decision

New Delhi – The Calcutta High Court has ordered the State Election Commission to deploy central paramilitary forces to prevent violence during next month’s panchayat elections in Bengal. This decision was challenged in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court dismissed the plea and said, “the intention behind High Court’s decision was to conduct free and fair elections. It is necessary to do this as there are elections in the panchayats of the State on the same day.”
Panchayat elections are being held in Bengal on 8th July. A few days ago, there was violence in 100 places between the two groups of the ruling party Trinamool Congress in the State. At that time, the groups had thrown crude bombs at each other.

The fact that central forces have to be deployed for panchayat level elections shows how law and order has deteriorated in Bengal. Therefore, the Union Government should implement President’s Rule in Bengal. |
