Bengaluru (Karnataka) – Buffaloes are slaughtered openly, then why not cows ?, stated K Venkatesh, the Minister of Animal Husbandry in the newly elected Congress Government in Karnataka. In 2021, the BJP Government passed a bill banning the slaughtering of cows. However, the Congress Government is considering amending the stringent law. Venkatesh said that the bill’s amendment will benefit the state’s farmers. Besides, this statement by K Venkatesh has infuriated Hindus all the more.

“We have not decided yet. The previous BJP government had brought in a bill, in that they have allowed slaughter of buffaloes and male buffaloes, but have said cow slaughter should not be done. We will discuss it and decide,” Venkatesh said.

Responding to a question on the difficulty faced by farmers in managing aged cows, the minister shared his own example where he had to get an earthmover to bury his dead cow.

They would inquire about, what had happened to the scheme of adopting a cow ? There was no dearth of money for managing a cow shed, but they had not been run satisfactorily.

What is anti-cow slaughter Bill ?

The bill seeks a total ban on the slaughter of cows in the state and stringent punishment to those who indulge in smuggling, illegal transportation, atrocities on cows and slaughtering them. According to the ordinance, slaughtering of cattle would lead to imprisonment of up to 3-7 years, along with a penalty ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakhs. Subsequent offences would be jailed for seven years and a fine of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakhs would be levied.
