Efforts to fix limits on donations to political parties

New Delhi – Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar has written to Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju recommending several amendments to the Representation of the People Act. It said that the maximum limit for a cash donation to political parties should be fixed to 20 percent of the existing amount or Rs 20 crore, whichever is less.

Also, it has been recommended to reduce the limit of an anonymous cash donation from Rs 20,000 to Rs 2,000 to curb the circulation of black money during elections. Currently, Rs 20,000 is the cash limit to all the political parties in the country as per the rules of the Election Commission.
