Ex-MLAs will be given a pension for just one term : Govt of Punjab

Editorial comment

The term of the public representatives is only 5 years and yet they continue to receive their pensions for the rest of their lives, and then it is given to their families. This must stop. How can an MLA get a pension just after 5 years of the term, when an ordinary Government employee gets a pension only after 20 years of service ?

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann

Chandigarh (Punjab) – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has announced that ex-MLAs in the State will get a pension just for one term. Earlier, MLAs were getting pension as many times as they were elected as MLA. In other words, if a person was elected 5 times, then pension was being paid for all 5 times.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that these MLAs are getting ₹4 lakhs and ₹5 lakhs as pension. Those who were formerly an MP and later became an MLA were receiving both the pensions. Now, no matter how many times a person becomes an MLA, he will be paid a pension just for one term, as well as his family’s pension will be reduced.
