What is Sethusamudram project?
The area from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu to Gulf of Mannar in Sri Lanka is called ‘Ram Setu’. Some countries call it as ‘Adam’s Bridge’. The ocean is very shallow here, which results in difficulty in transportation of big Ships. In 2005, the then Congress-led Government had announced the ‘Sethusamudram Project’ to ease the difficulty in transportation of big ships. For this, the Government felt the necessity to destroy a part of the Ram Setu. The Supreme Court of India has issued a Stay Order against the Project.
