Geneva (Switzerland) – Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has been appointed as the Chairman of the 34-member Executive Board of the World Health Organisation. He will assume office from 22nd May. In regional groups, the term of office is given on a rotational basis for one year. It was decided to give the post to India for the first year starting 22nd May. The decision to appoint India to the Executive Board for 3 years was taken last year by the World Health Organisation’s Southeast Asia Group.
The Executive Board meets twice a year and the main meeting is held in January. A meeting of the board is held in May immediately after the International Health Regulations Meeting. The Chairman of the Executive Board is responsible to provide appropriate advice to make all the rules and policies of the Health Council to make them effective.
