Dhaka (Bangladesh) – We will not do anything against our neighbouring countries that would be against their military interests. At the same time, we shall also expect that our neighbouring countries would not do anything that would be against our interests. When we look after their interests, they too will look after our interests, stated Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman in an interview. It was believed that the Bangladesh army played an important role in bringing a change of power in Bangladesh. After toppling of the earlier Government, India Bangladesh ties are strained. In this connection, Waker Zaman was asked this question when he gave the above answer.
We will not do anything against our neighbouring countries and they should not do anything against us as well! – #Bangladesh Army Chief’s statement
India however does not expect the continuous genocide of Hindus within Bangladesh and General Waqar should also answer as to why… pic.twitter.com/g778fzGmVm

General Waker stated that last year’s movement by the people of Bangladesh was historic. Regarding elections, he said that people wanted impartial and peaceful elections and that is the main objective of the interim Government. The army will extend full cooperation to the interim Government to implement the election plan.
Bangladeshis should not feel India is dominating them
Regarding relations with India, Waker said that India is an important neighbour. We are dependent on India in many ways. India is also getting facilities from us. Many people go for medical treatment to India from here. We buy things from them; therefore, India has a lot of interest in Bangladesh’s stability. These are ‘give and take’ relations. We want ties based on fairness. Good relations will have to be maintained based on equality but our people should not feel dominated by India.
Our policy is to have friendly relations with everyone and not hate anyone
Army chief Waker also spoke about the unrest on borders due to internal strife in Myanmar. He stated that stability along the Myanmar border won’t be disrupted. India will also address Bangladesh’s concerns on several issues, including the sharing of water of cross-border rivers and the issue of alleged killings of people along the border. India will not kill our people. We will get our fair share of water. Let the relations be on an equal footing. We have an excellent foreign policy of friendship towards all, malice towards none.
Editorial PerspectiveNot only interfering in other countries matters but India expects that Bangladesh should not do anything even against Hindus in that country. General Waker needs to explain why Hindus are not protected in Bangladesh. |
