Bern (Switzerland) – From 1st January, 2025, women in Switzerland will be banned from wearing the hijab (a garment worn by Muslim women to cover their head and neck), burqa or any other means of covering their faces in public places. Under this law, women will not be able to completely cover their faces in public places such as public offices, public transport, restaurants, shops, etc. Violation of this law will result in a fine of up to approximately Rs 96,000.

Before Switzerland, laws have also been made in countries such as Belgium, France, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands and Bulgaria. In the year 2022, the Swiss Parliament voted on a law banning women from covering their faces. This time, 151 members voted in favour and 29 members voted against. The law was then passed. Earlier, in 2009, the construction of minarets (towers built around mosques) was banned in Switzerland through a referendum.

Editorial Perspective

If a secular and reformist country like Switzerland can make such a law, why is such a law not being made in India ?
