Murtis of Hindu Deities found in the basement of Jama Masjid in Bharuch (Gujarat)

Bharuch (Gujarat) – Ancient Murtis (Idols) of Hindu Deities, along with Murtis associated with Jain Tirthankars, have reportedly been found in the sealed basement of the 700-year-old Jama Masjid. A video circulated recently claimed there were many ancient Hindu Murtis, and a Murti of Bhagawan Mallinath (the 19th Tirthankar of Jains) in the basement of the mosque. After this, Hindu and Jain organisations have demanded an inquiry into the matter.

Inspection of the mosque by the ASI

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) inspected the premises of the mosque under tight security. The inspection of the basement was recorded in a video. It is claimed that an ancient Murti bearing the inscription ‘Samvat 1213’ and remains of traditional carvings have been found on many pillars. However, these claims have not yet been officially confirmed. Therefore, it is believed that legal action will be decided in the future only on the basis of the final official report of the ASI.

Jama Masjid Trust rejects the claim

Jama Masjid Trust officials have rejected all these claims. They say that the history of the mosque is clearly mentioned in Government records, the 1907 Gazette and documents of the Waqf Board.

The Trust has said that it is considering legal action against those who incite religious sentiments and create unnecessary controversy.

ASI removes illegal Wazu Khana

Recently, the ASI removed an additional Wazu Khana (a place for washing hands and feet before offering namaz) built without permission in the mosque premises. A controversial entrance has been sealed. The ASI has clarified that this step has been taken to ensure compliance with the rules related to protected monuments.

Mahant Muktanand Swami of Shankaracharya Muth said that this discovery has strengthened the claims he had made earlier. This place was once known as the ‘Jain Samari Vihar’ of Jainism, and it is also believed to be the birthplace of Shri Chakradhar Swami.
