United States to deport 18,000 Indian nationals

Action against those without valid documents
No opportunity to present a legal defence

New York (United States) – The administration of US President Donald Trump has begun preparations to deport 18,000 Indian nationals residing in the United States without valid documents. Those concerned will reportedly be barred from presenting their legal defence.

Military aircraft will once again be used to deport such individuals. Government agencies are conducting raids at various locations to identify undocumented immigrants. New detention centres have been established in El Paso and California for migrants who are to be deported for lacking valid documentation. Approximately ₹16,500 crore has been spent on these facilities. The centres have temporary accommodation for around 12,000 migrants. Surveys conducted in New York, Texas, California and New Jersey indicate that the lives of such Indian nationals have been severely disrupted. Complaints have also been made regarding the alleged ill-treatment of some detainees at these centres.

3,567 Indians were deported from the United States in 2025

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, 3,567 Indian nationals were deported from the United States in 2025. By June 2026, another 1,076 Indian nationals had been repatriated to India.

On 5th February 2025, the United States, for the first time, sent 104 Indian nationals to Amritsar on a military aircraft. During that deportation, many of them were handcuffed and shackled. Photographs of the incident sparked widespread controversy across India and also led to uproar in Parliament.
