District Court Lifts Stay on Chemical Coating of the Shri Vitthal–Rukmini murti at Pandharpur !

Solapur, Maharashtra – The Shri Vitthal–Rukmini Temple Committee and the Archaeological Department were scheduled to carry out chemical Vajralepan (protective coating) on the Swayambhu (self-manifested) Idols of Shri Vitthal and Shri Rukmini at Pandharpur on 22 and 23 June. Opposing this, the Warkari Sampradaya and the Maharashtra Temple Federation filed a petition before the Civil Court (Junior Division) at Pandharpur. While delivering its order, the court granted a stay on the chemical coating. The Temple Committee challenged this order before the District Court. After hearing both sides, the District Court delivered its judgment on 17 July, lifting the stay.

The suit before the Civil Judge (Junior Division) at Pandharpur was filed by the Warkari Sampradaya, Mr Balkrishna Dingre, and Mr Purushottam (Ganesh) Lanke of the Maharashtra Temple Federation.

In this regard, Advocate Sudhir Ranade, who represented the Warkari Sampradaya and the Maharashtra Temple Federation before the Pandharpur court, said, “While delivering its judgment, the court considered the technical aspects of the matter. The issue was not examined from a religious perspective. Therefore, we will challenge this decision before the Circuit Bench of the Bombay High Court at Kolhapur (a temporary sitting of the High Court where High Court judges hear and decide cases for a specified period).”
