
Mumbai, 23 June – A Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is proposed to be implemented in Maharashtra. In accordance with the directions of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, a committee headed by a retired judge of the Bombay High Court will be constituted to prepare a draft of the Uniform Civil Code. A decision on implementing the UCC in Maharashtra will be taken after the committee submits its report. The Government is positive about introducing a Uniform Civil Code, Minister of State for Home (Urban) Yogesh Kadam informed the Legislative Assembly on 23 June.
BJP MLA Mrs Devyani Farande had raised a Calling Attention Motion in the Legislative Assembly seeking strict action against undesirable practices such as triple talaq in the State. Replying to the motion, Minister of State Yogesh Kadam told the House, “The Uniform Civil Code will apply to people of all religions. It will also place restrictions on the practice of polygamy among Muslims.”
