Tel Aviv (Israel) – Israel has stated that its military will remain deployed in the security zone in southern Lebanon for many years and will not withdraw, regardless of the pressure exerted by the United States.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said:
1. Israel will not change its position until the terrorist organisation Hezbollah completely lays down its arms and surrenders. There is no expectation that the United States will make any formal demand for Israeli forces to withdraw from Lebanon. Israel may develop permanent military infrastructure and bases in the security zone instead of maintaining only temporary checkpoints.
2. The current border arrangement does not fulfil Israel’s security requirements. The country needs defensively secure borders. We will not retreat even by a single millimetre until Hezbollah withdraws. This is the position of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Defence Minister and myself.
