Woman dies while attempting to remove branches hanging over her house after the municipality failed to act despite repeated complaints

Elderly woman dies owing to the negligence of the Bengaluru Municipal Corporation

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – Despite repeatedly informing the municipal administration about branches from a tree adjacent to her house extending over it, no action was taken to remove them. As a result, 58-year-old Pramilabai herself climbed onto the terrace to remove the branches. While doing so, she slipped and fell to the ground, sustaining severe head injuries. She underwent treatment in hospital for three days, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The incident has led to criticism that the municipal administration is taking no action regarding complaints about overgrown trees in the city.

Pramilabai’s husband, Siddharao, said that their family had been troubled for a long time by trees growing within the premises of their house. “My wife tried to remove a tree branch, and in that attempt alone she has lost her life. I recently underwent surgery on my leg and she used to take care of me. Who will take care of me now ?”, he asked emotionally.

B. Sudarshan, Forest Range Officer of the Western Division, said, “We have not received any complaint from the woman regarding the tree. After receiving information about the death, I visited the site and found that the woman had slipped and fallen from the third-floor balcony. There were no railings or protective walls at the place where the incident occurred.”
